SIGNS Your dog’s eyes are red with a yellow or green discharge. His eyes continue to water. He squints or rubs his eyes. The tissue around the eye appears swollen. With cataracts, the middle of the eye (the lens) appears cloudy.
CAUSES The causes of “red eye” are numerous. The most common are bacterial conjunctivitis, bacterial infection of the tissue around the eye, and allergic conjunctivitis. Other, more serious causes include glaucoma (swelling in the eye) or an ulcer on the cornea (erosion on the surface of the eye) . Cataracts are primarily caused by normal aging changes, although they may be secondary to diabetes.
The American goldfinch (Carduelis tristis) is a bright yellow bird often seen at birdfeeders. The goldfinch is found throughout the northern half of the United States and is a year-round resident of Vermont.
The male goldfinch has a bright yellow body with white at the base of the tail, and a black forehead, wings and tail. The female is a duller, grayer yellow with black wings and tail. In winter, however, the male molts its feathers and its color becomes muted. Male and female goldfinches average four inches in length, from beak to tail. Its short, stout beak; typical of members of the Finch family is ideal for cracking seeds. The goldfinch has a song that sounds like per-chick- o-ree, which some people say sounds like it is singing potato chips.

Dental diseases. Since hamsters have constantly growing front teeth (incisors), they occasionally develop overgrown front teeth for a variety of reasons. Incisor overgrowth may be visible as long, crooked, tusk-like projections from the mouth. Chewing on hard objects such as wood or metal may twist and damage the teeth, and increase the risk of overgrowth. Offer your hamster soft chew toys, such as ink-free cardboard, instead of wood to chew on; this may minimize damage to the incisors. Treatment of tooth problems often involves trimming the overgrown teeth back to normal length and/or extracting any infected teeth. If the incisors overgrow severely, the hamster may be unable to eat. Fasting hamsters need immediate care because they can die from bowel upsets with inadequate roughage intake.
